From 1941 Eritrea was no longer under the control of the Italians as they were mandated to the Britsish, that mandate ended in 1951. 24th May 1993 they gained their independence from Ethiopia. The government is one of a single-party presidential republic, the president is Isaias Afewerki. Legislation takes place in a National Assembly.
